【本棚をのぞく③】大学院生編 Let me see your bookshelf!
There was a man with a broad knowledge of history in Doshisha Post. He is now a graduate student. He can speak Korean, Japanese and English fluently. I was dying to see how his bookshelf is like.
This time, I asked him to show his bookshelf and conducted an interview.
かつて同志社英字新聞部に所属しており、現在は大学院へ通う1人の学生に本棚についてのインタビューを行いました。言語能力に優れ、広い歴史の知識を司る彼の本棚はどのようなものなのか深掘りしました。

【普段の読書量はいかに】
H: Thank you for taking my interview, Kimchi King san! So, I want to know how often you read books at first.
K: Well, I read several chapters in a day. I also read three to five books simultaneously in a week. Not focus on only one.
H: Okey. Then, is reading books for study or fun?
K: I used to read books to study. But one day, I noticed that reading became my routine. Also, thinking like, “hmm I have to read books….” is kind of frustrating, right? I feel free to read books now.📚
H: wow, reading became your routine!
Watching your bookshelf, I see some books borrowed from a library. Do you buy books personally? Are they books that you’ve prepared for classes?
K: Yes, I mainly borrow book from a library. Bookstores don’t sell the one for an academic paper.📝

【本、何語で読む？】🇬🇧🇯🇵🇨🇳🇰🇷🇫🇷🇧🇪
H: Okey, how about languages? Which languages do you feel comfortable when you read?
K: It’s Korean. But I major in a history about Japanese including other nations, and there are lots of resources and documents written in Japanese. So I gotta read in Japanese! I make some notes in Korean when I encounter difficult words. About languages, I have studied Japanese, English, Chinese and German and I’m going to study French.
H: No way… almost six languages… Actually, books you read are difficult for even Japanese. Could you tell me more about your major?
K: Sure, I’m studying about modern East Asia, especially a relationship between Japan and Korean in 19-20 century. I need to improve my expertise by deepening my knowledge of the neighboring nations. So I read anything about a history.
【またもや司馬遼太郎の名前が！】
H: Okey, but do you read books like bunko文庫?
K: Yes. I don’t have them but I’m fond of books written by Ryotaro Shiba（司馬遼太郎). I have read 『坂の上の雲』and『この国のかたち』. I also visited places related to the stories. These books motivated me to study history.

K: Also these books 教養のための現代史入門、日本の歴史、東アジア国際政治史 were really helpful to me. They helped me to study a broad range of history when I took an entrance examination of graduate school.✏️

H: These are the recommendations for every students who are trying to study history!
Then, this is the last question. Are there any books you want to read?
K: Well, I actually want to try to do write a book in my life. I want to write a story about history from the aspects of other countries. I want to go beyond the borders by means of languages. With a positive attitude, I will continue to learn history and culture of others nations.

K: Thank you!
自身の言語能力に加え、幅広い歴史の知識を用いて意識の中にある国境を取っ払おうとするキムチキングさん。彼の勉強していることと、彼の本棚は密接に関連し合っていました。
